How Does a Spider Spin Its Web; Step on Making Orb Webbing

Itsy bitsy spiders—and some that aren’t so itsy bitsy—live everywhere on Earth, except for the Polar Regions. They crawl around in dry deserts, on mountains, below ground, in oceans—possibly in some corners of your home. 
 
Most spiders are web masters. A gland in their abdomen produces silk. The silk is pushed through a body part called spinneret and comes out as a thread. Some spiders spin silk webs that look like big white sheets. Some webs look like tiny drops stretched across plants or grass. One of the most common webs is the orb web, which is shown in the illustration below. 
 
This is the kind you see on the Halloween or in a spooky haunted house in scary movies. A spider waits at the center of the orb web for a tasty insect to land. This makes the web vibrate. The spider knows from the vibration whether or not it is food. If the spider is lucky, dinner is served!

The dangling strand sticks to another branch. The spider attaches the other end of the strands to the branch it’s standing on. Then it crosses back and the forth over that strand, strengthening it with more stands.</li> <li>The spider makes a loose strand connecting the two ends of the first strand. Next it drops down a strand at the middle of the loop to form a Y shape. These three strands are the first spokes of the web.</li> <li>The spider spins a frame around the Y-shaped spoke. The rest of the spokes will be attached to the frame.</li> <li>The spider makes more spokes. Each spoke is close so the spider can walk on one while making another. Spokes also must be close enough so the spider can walk across them when the web is complete. These threads are not sticky.</li> <li>When the spokes are finished, the spider makes a few circular threads in the center of the web to make it strong. Then it spins a spiral of non-sticky thread from the center of the web to the edge of the frame. This helps the spider construct the rest of the web.</li> <li>The spider spins many more spiral strands using sticky threads. When finished, the spider will remove the non-sticky spiral. Total time for the building the web: 30 minutes. For more than 20 years, Kutcher has been rounding up bugs and helping them get roles in movies and TV. He worked on the first three Spider-Man movies, as well as many others in which insects played a supporting role. 
 
During “auditions,” Kutcher doesn’t look for insects that can act. He looks for bugs that can get the job done. For Spider-Man, for instance, Kutcher studied what spider would have to do—spin a web, climb a wall. 
 
Kutcher hopes that insect-filled movies will help turn bug-fearing folks into fans.

How To Make a Blubber

Brrrr! That's what most people shout when they jump into cold water. Humans can't swim very long in very chilly water without a wet suit. But marine mammals, like polar bears and walruses, have no problem diving into icy seas. How come? One word: blubber.

Blubber is a thick layer of fat that insulates animals. It keeps their body heat from escaping into the cold water. There is blubber in many sea creatures, including whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, manatees, and dugongs. The thickness of the blubber ranges from a few inches in dolphins and polar bears to a foot in some whales.

Blubber is also a source of energy. When there’s no food around, marine mammals can live off their fatty layers. Humans have a layer of fat too, but it doesn’t do much insulating. Try this experiment to see how blubber can keep you warm.

Blubber is just one way animals keep warm when the temperature drops. They have plenty of the other cool ways to deal with the cold.
<ul> <li>Anti-Freeze: The temperatures in Arctic and Antarctic waters would freeze solid the bodily fluids of most fish. But not the Arctic cod and other fish that swim in these waters. They have a kind of anti-freeze inside them. A special gene makes proteins that keep the blood of these fish from freezing.</li> <li>Fur Sure: Many Arctic animals have thick fur to stay warm. Besides its blubber, the polar bear has two layers of hair that keep it toasty. An outer layer of long, oily hair repels water. An inner layer of shorter hairs traps heat near the polar bear’s skin.</li> <li>Winter Pause: Cold-blooded nimals, such as snakes, frogs, and lizards, shut off their body systems during winter. They can live half alive, half dead, for weeks at a time.</li> <li>Shape Shifter: The Arctic fox is rounder than foxes that live in warmer areas. A round, plump shape holds in more heat than a longer shape. Arctic animals also tend to have shorter ears, tails, and legs, so less heat escapes.</li> <li>Dig Deep: Small mammals, like mice and voles, dig little underground nests, called burrows, and doze through the cold days. Bears and some other larger mammals hibernate, or sleep, through winter. They save energy during their winter-long snooze.</li></ul>

It’s not easy to get lost. Today, people have excellent maps and GPS satellite system that shows us where we are. A thousand years ago, people didn’t have either. When they were sailing on the ocean, it was tough to figure out their location. Around 1100 A.D., sailors came up with a way to help them navigate: a compass. Their compass was a magnetized needle that floated in a bucket of water. Today, there are many types of compasses, but the compass used by ancient sailors can still point you in the right direction.

Deep in the planet’s core is a molten ball of iron. The rotation of the Earth makes the liquid iron spin, which produces a magnetic field is located near the North Pole. The south end is near the South Pole. A compass is a magnet with a north and south end. Since opposites attract, the south end of a magnet points towards the magnetic north. The north end points to the magnetic south.

Floating in water, the compass rotates in the direction of Earth’s magnetic field. Here are some tips in case it ever happens. <ul> <li>Never go on a hike without an adult.</li> <li>Make sure a relative or friend knows where you will be hiking.</li> <li>If you are lost, stay in one place or area, do not wander around look for help—help will find you.</li> <li>Keep warm and dry while waiting for someone to come for you. Cover up your exposed skin. Wear a hat to keep your head warm.</li> <li>Stay together with the other hikers. You can hold on to each other to keep warm.</li> <li>Find comfortable place to stay that will keep you out of the wind and rain.
